Rotary Club Gives Books to Babies

The North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale Rotary Club distributed the classic children's book Good Night Moon to the first babies born at St. John's Hospital in January 2011. To promote early literacy, the club plans to distribute a book to every baby born at the hospital in 2011.

Century College student Xiong Vue of Cottage Grove gave birth to one of the first babies of the year at St. John's. Baby Bruce Vue was born on 1-1-11. He joins brothers Matthew and Theodore. Xiong is in the dental assisting program at Century.

 

Erika Bonner of Brooklyn Center gave birth to baby Laneya on 1-2-11. Xavier Delaney is the proud papa.

North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale Rotary Club members Jean Strait of Hamline University, left, and Sonya Czerepak, principal of Cowern Elementary School, distributed the books on Jan. 2. According to the National Reading Foundation, a child who is read to at least 20 minutes a day from birth to kindergarten is likely to acquire the pre-literacy skills essential for learning to read. Children who are read to also learn to love books and want to become good readers.
